ARTERIOSCLEROSIS

GENERAL
Etiologic importance of lipid, cholesterol infiltration. Affects the smaller arteries and arterioles. Small yellow refractile particles composed of cholesterol (Hollenhorst's plaques) can be seen in the branch retinal arterioles. They usually originate from the carotid artery. Can cause branch retinal artery occlusion resulting in transient or permanent field defects.

VISUAL... amaurosis fugax
FIELD... defects of optic nerve or tracts
EOM... palsies, nystagmus
ORBIT... hemorrhage
CONJUN... tortuous vessels, subconjunctival hemorrhages
C.B... accommodative insufficiency
VITREOUS... hemorrhages
CHOROID... angiosclerosis, expulsive hemorrhage
RETINA... Hollenhorst's plaque, angiospasm, angiosclerosis, macular degeneration, hemorrhages, venus thrombosis, branch retinal artery occlusion
OPTIC... atrophy, pseudo-glaucomatous appearance
