Macular degeneration is a medical condition usually of older adults which results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It occurs in “dry” and “wet” forms. It is a major cause of blindness in the elderly (>50 years). Macular degeneration can make it difficult or impossible to read or recognize faces, although enough peripheral vision remains to allow other activities of daily life.
Dry macular degeneration, in which tissue deterioration is not accompanied by bleeding, is the most common form of the disease.
Wet macular degeneration occurs when new blood vessels grow and leak fluid underneath the macula, an area of densely packed light-sensitive cells in the central part of the retina. Most cases of wet macular degeneration develop from the dry type of macular degeneration.
Early detection and treatment of wet macular degeneration may help reduce the extent of vision loss and in some instances improve vision.

There’s a lot of research taking place now for Macular Degeneration.
is a great Canadian Site that seems to have many great sources of research based information.
