CAROTID ARTERY DISEASE

GENERAL
Carotid vascular insufficiency syndrome. Causes include microemboli, atherosclerotic plaques, arteritis and arterial compression. This syndrome has a male preponderance between the ages of 50 and 70.

OCULAR SIDE EFFECTS & SYMPTOMS

SYMPTOMS... headache, dizziness, mental confusion, photopsia
VISION... homolateral blur to blindness, diplopia, astereognosis
FIELDS... contralateral hemianopsia
CONJUN... subconjunctival hemorrhages
LID... ipsilateral Horner's ptosis
IRIS... contralateral miosis
IOP... low-tension glaucoma
RETINA... lowered arterial pressure, central artery occlusion, striated pallor, retinal infarcts, cholesterol plaques
FIELDS... hemianopsia
OPTIC... homolateral atrophy
TENSION... homolateral glaucoma
