Herpes Simplex
GENERAL
Define herpes simplex: A DNA virus for which man is a natural host. Natural environmental exposure to the virus occurs between ages 1-5. Prevalance of herpes-neutralizing antibodies in the adult population ranges between 30-97%. The transmission of herpes simplex occurs through direct contact with virus containing secretions. Exposure to the virus at mucosal surface or skin abrasions permits access to the host.
