Herpes Zoster
GENERAL
The varicella zoster virus is responsible for the diseases of chickenpox and zoster. Man is the only natural host for the virus. The most common single nerve involved is the trigeminal nerve, especially the ophthalmic division.
OCULAR SIDE EFFECTS & SYMPTOMS
- VISION... photophobia, blur
- SYMPTOM... headache, fever, malaise, eye pain
- FACIAL... rash on lower eyelid and cheek
- EOM... paralysis of cranial nerve III, IV, VI
- GLOBE... proptosis
- LID... trigeminal eruption, vesicles, gangrene, lagophthalmus, vertigo, swelling, scarring, ptosis
- CONJUN... injection, vesicles, ulcers, edema, conjunctivitis, hyperemia, follicular reaction
- CORNEA... ulcers, limbal papule, anesthesia, edema, superficial punctate keratitis, stromal keratitis
- SCLERA... episcleritis, scleritis
- IRIS... atrophy, iridocyclitis, depigmentation, A-R pupil, Adie's pupil
- C.B... accommodative paresis
- RETINA... edema
- OPTIC... optic neuritis, atrophy, papillitis
- TENSION... secondary glaucoma
