Leprosy (Hansen's Disease)

GENERAL
Leprosy is still on the increase and it is epidemic in most underdeveloped countries. Its numbers today exceed 15 million. Leprosy carries the highest incidence of ocular complications of any systemic disease; however, much of the damage to the eyes is amenable to therapy.

OCULAR SIDE EFFECTS & SYMPTOMS

VISION... blindness, decreased accommodation
SYMPTOM... painless red eye
LID... loss of blinking, lagophthalmos, entropion, trichiasis, blepharochalasis
CORNEA... thickening and destruction of corneal nerves, hypesthesia, stromal keratitis, opacification, absent corneal sensation
IRIS... dilator atrophy, miosis, iridocyclitis, pinpoint nonreacting pupils
LENS... cataract, white bodies (iris pearls)
